We took a bus today from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh. The bus took about 6 hours. On the way we stopped for lunch at a beautiful little spot in Prey Pros. The restaurant was on stilts stretching out onto a river. After a breakfast of egg fried rice with vegetables I must admit I was not overly hungry so opted for some chicken fried egg roles. They were delicious.
On the drive I noticed that a lot of Cambodian land is really dry. This may be because it is the dry season. This is a sharp contrast to the beautiful green trees.
We took a quick stop at Skun which is also known as tarantula town. This is where the local people go out and hunt for tarantulas. These are then cooked and served as a snack. It is quite an affordable food and high in protein which makes it an ideal snack when other food isn’t in season. In addition to the tarantulas there were other insects including crickets, beetles and butterfly cocoons.
We didn’t try any of the food on sale due to some hygiene concerns however we are going to try and hunt down some tarantula at Phnom Penh.
Phnom Penh is the capital city of Cambodia. It has a population of 2.6 million, officially it is only 1.6 million. This is because there are a lot of unreported homeless and unemployed people. Phnom Penh became the capital city in 1865 when the French colonial authorities turned it from a riverside village into a city. A lot of the architecture is therefore French. I can’t wait to explore this city more tomorrow!
