Day 146-151- Well, I am on a farm...

Day 146- Saturday

So today was a travel day. I left the beautiful Sydney which reminded me so much of London to go to my new job! My new job is based around an hour outside of Dubbo which is a 6.5 hour train journey from Sydney. The journey went without a hitch. I must admit that as per usual I fell asleep for most of it. I arrived at the farm pretty late but enjoyed a pasta dinner before hitting the hay ready for an early start on Sunday morning.

Day 147- Sunday
Today marked my first day working. It’s been a while and I was a bit apprehensive. I absolutely hate the first few weeks of a new job. You feel so useless because you can’t just crack on. You are constantly asking questions and just feel like a general pain.

I must admit my first day wasn’t too bad. I spent my day bottle feeding baby cows, cleaning up after the cows, cleaning the equipment and learning about cows. We got given some steaks and beef items which were from a cow that had passed away so of course that meant steak for dinner! Delicious!

Day 148- Monday
Today was more of the same. I got absolutely covered in cow poo but also spent the whole day chatting and singing to the cows as I cleaned up after them!

Day 149- Tuesday
I must admit I didn’t write anything down for this day... I probably had pasta for dinner...

Day 150- Wednesday
Today was an exciting day... on our morning rounds feeding the cows we noticed something so beautiful... a baby cow which has been born during the night. He was absolutely gorgeous! I immediately fell in love with him! Watching him as he walked with a bit of a shake and looking so confused. I was lucky enough to be the one to name him. I settled on Swifty. welcome to the world little one!

I also opened the door after lunch to see two cats literally on the doorstep having an intimate moment... it’s a farm thing...

Day 151- Thursday
After yesterday’s exciting new arrival I got the opportunity to bottle feed the new baby... not as simple as you might think. First problem is they need to be taught how to use a bottle, this involves a pretty distressing looking hold of the calf while you force a bottle teet in its mouth and help to stimulate the milk flow by moving their jaw... luckily this calf is a quick learner and guzzled like no other!

Today was also a day where I had a new task to complete on my own. I had to do something called ‘drafting’. This is where you basically herd a load of cows and put them in the correct pen. The hardest bit is trying to tell the calf’s apart... like humans all cows look different however some still look very similar to me! It was a good challenge and although it took a bit more time then it would someone who has done it before it could have been worse!

Tonight I saw something I never thought was possible to see. I realise how stupid this sounds but I saw the Milky Way. I was in bed when my housemate runs in and tells me to come outside, Hannah just simply said ‘look at the stars’. My mind was blown. I have never seen so many stars, it was like being inside a snow globe. I suppose this is a perk to being on a farm miles from anywhere, the lack of artificial lighting... we looked at the stars and the white glow of the Milky Way and saw another first... a shooting star. My mind is blown. It sounds crazy but this was such a reminder that even though the earth seems huge, there is a whole universe out there to be explored.

An Update

Things over the last week have developed and happened really quickly. I am still trying to process how I feel. I will get round to calling everyone and talking to everyone but right now I am selfishly putting myself and my well-being (both mentally and physically first). On Tuesday I was informed I no longer had my job in Australia. This was the start of the collapse of my dream. A lot of people were in the same position and with the job market in Australia becoming more and more dire each day, thousands of people including Australians loosing their jobs, businesses shutting left right and centre as well as the daily reports that flights out of Australia were shutting down I was left with one option. I had to leave. At the time this did not feel like a choice. I knew I didn’t have the financial ability to support myself for the next 6 months, which is potentially how long it would have taken to restore any normality. I had enough money in Australia to buy a ticket home, which...

Bikinis, boat parties and first dates! 27.01.20- 02.02.20

In my effort to keep people updated more with my life I am going to try and write at least one post a week. No promises but here is my summary of the last week! Monday was a public holiday here in Australia which could mean only one thing... brunch and a day at the beach! Amanda and I decided to head on the ferry to Watson’s bay! Shamefully this is the first time that I had been on the ferry! It was absolutely beautiful seeing the city from the boat. The Sydney skyline is actually pretty spectacular.  We arrived at Watson bay and headed to the Watson bay hotel for a spot of brunch. It was delicious. Obviously it would not be brunch without cocktails. It was a day of sitting on the beach and soaking up the sun. Whilst we were there I had a hinge message. For those not in the know, hinge is a dating app. I haven’t dated anyone since leaving the UK but thought it would be fun whilst I am relatively settled in sydney. The message was from a guy called Dan, as...

Day 2- Don’t look the moneys in the eyes

An early train this morning meant a 5:30 wake up call. Feeling very groggy and tired we caught the train from Delhi to Agra. The train was pretty comfortable and actually on time! Due to the nippy morning even my bobble hat got some use! On the train we were served a breakfast which consisted of a biscuit, some vegetable croquet (we didn’t know the name of these however this is as similar as it gets back home). We also got some bread and lemon juice. It was basic but it filled the hole. The first stop in Agra was the Agra Fort. This was built in the late 1500s and is pretty substantial in size coming in at around 94 acres. The fort has been home to many emperors until 1638 when the capital of India moved from Agra to Delhi. It is absolutely beautiful with loads of detailed carvings and incredible architecture. It also  had  some pretty superb views of the Taj Mahal. We even spotted a monkey too! We were told under no circumstances to look them in...
