Week 3 to 6 - A General update

So... where do I start? It’s been a while since I wrote a blog post. As I expected since I started working this blog had taken a back seat. This is for two reasons; I don’t have as much free time  I now have routine and so I would write the same thing every day. Today instead of the previous format I am just going to write where I am at and how I feel. I am a bit unsure of how this blog will go in the future and the format but time will tell! I have been busy, but since my last update I have found a routine. I am so much more capable in my role and am learning so so much. More than I expected. It’s funny because I didn’t appreciate before coming here how much goes into raising cattle and other farm animals. I didn’t fully appreciate the complexities of running a farm. Now this isn’t because I thought it was easy. I had just never thought about it. I had never thought about the required variety in a cattle’s diet. I had never really taken time to think about the equipm...

RIP Swifty

Today was the day Swifty passed away. Dear Swifty For the last week you have been deteriorating. You stopped being able to get up on your own followed by stopping being able to stand even once you were stood up finally followed by not being able to eat.  On your last day we put you into the garden so you could get some sunlight. I told you I loved you at every opportunity and gave you lots of cuddles.  You weren’t even a month old. You didn’t quite reach that milestone but baby you tried so so hard. The whole team did everything they could for you but unfortunately youjust weren’t strong enough.  For the last 3 and a bit weeks you have been there every day. It sounds silly but you were someone to talk to and you were so affectionate. You gave me comfort when I am so far away from home. I remember the first day I saw you, you were so small and fragile. You were so scared of the world. I treated you as if you were my child, I tried my best and I’m sorr...

Day 159-177 Week 2 and 3

Day 159- Saturday  This is a pretty awesome job... we walked into the pen to feed some calf’s and saw that one of the sheep had given birth to two healthy looking lambs. She was doing such a good job looking after them. This is really quite magical to watch!  Day 170- Monday Anyone ever sheared a sheep? Today was sheep shearing day so I went along to help sort the wool. I basically had to stand at a spinning table and take off any edges from the wool or any stains. This sounds simple but it was not so easy... the burs in the wool have a great ability to cut up your hands. It was hard work and very fast paced. If you slowed down then there would be a backlog of wool... not ideal. I’m going to soak my hands in disinfectant and pray for the best. But here is Hannah standing in a pack of wool to condense it... Day 171- Tuesday  Alan has returned. Day 172- Wednesday  The goat has got to go... washed my clothes and put them out to dr...

Day 152- 158 The first week!

Day 152- Friday So today is my first day off since arriving at the farm! This is by far one of the hardest jobs I have done, the long days and cold early mornings are not fun but the people are so lovely, the cattle are hilarious and I spend each day laughing.  So as you may have noticed my blogging has not been going to plan. Unfortunately the remote nature of the farm means that signal is pretty awful everywhere. Occasionally you will get one bar and be able to stand in the same spot long enough to send a message but it is not always guaranteed!  I also just don’t have time to write too much I’m afraid! The days are spent working, in the evenings I eat dinner with my roommates and then at about 9 we head to bed!  So back to my day off, again due to the remote nature of the farm there isn’t a whole bunch to do. There isn’t a shop for miles and definitely no entertainment venues. I spent my day doing some laundry, reading a book, sitting out in the sun w...
