Day 92- Hiking in Penang National Park!

Today we decided to wake up earlyish (7am) to make the most of the cooler hours of the day as we wanted to do a hike in the national park. The national park is on the north west side of the island. There were a couple of hikes available to us however we chose to do the hike that led to the Kerachut Beach. It was a steep climb over the hillside but was absolutely beautiful. The trees and plants were a stunning shade of green, there were crystal clear waterfalls and we even spotted a few beautiful lizards and butterflies.  @ro_cam123 @j.a.farr and Marlin Dizzle @ro_cam123 @j.a.farr and Marlin Dizzle At the bottom of the hill we were surprised by a meromicitic lake (this is a lake where fresh and sea water form in two separate layers which do not mix).  This then lead us onto a beautiful beach which was so quiet. On the beach was a conservation centre for turtles. The conservation centre takes the turtle eggs and incuba...

Day 91- Temples, Viewpoints, Crushed Ice and Bats

The hostel I am currently staying at has a pool so this morning I took full advantage. This afternoon we took a trip to Kek Lok Si temple which is situated at the foot of the Air Itam mountain. This is the largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia. The entire complex was built over a period from 1890-1930. The literal translation of Kek Lok Si is ‘Temple of Ultimate Happiness’. The temple has a combination of Burmese, Thai and Chinese architecture. The 30m pagoda itself combines all of these styles in layers. There are additionally 10,000 statues of Buddha and an impressive tall bronze statue of Kuan Yin, the goddess of mercy.  After this we visited another temple which is known as ‘Bat Cave Temple’. This small Buddhist temple is dedicated to the god of prosperity Tua Pek Kong. The temple is thought to have been constructed around 1917. Towards the back of the temple there is  a small cave. Legand has it that a hermit used to cave for meditation...

Day 89 & 90 Penang Street Art

Day 89  So today I left the beautiful Langkawi. The plan is a three hour ferry ride to Penang. This is another island which is further south.  I really enjoyed Langkawi. It just confirms to me that Islands are definitely the places I enjoy most. I love being close to the ocean. I love the Forests and I love how undeveloped they are. Cities are busy, they create noise. Islands however are peaceful and quiet. I arrived at the ferry port nice and early to make sure I have time to buy my ticket. This did however mean that I sat in the departure lounge for a while. They eventually call for check in so I go and join the back of the line. This couple then come and stand in front of me in the less then 0.5m gap between me and the person in front. This seems to happen quite a lot in Malaysia. It seems to be that unless you are stood right on top of the person in front Malaysians don’t see you as part of the queue. It is very strange. As a Brit we have very strict rules wh...

Day 88- Suspended bridges and great views

Today was an exciting day! We started off by heading to a 3D art museum. This was absolutely awesome. The art is incredible and looks completely 3D despite being just painted on a wall! Following this we took a trip on the Langkawi cable cars. The cable car provides access to the peak of Gunung Machinchang. The total length of the cable car is 2.2km and provides views of the stunning forest below. The view from  the top was really stunning.  The cable car also provides access to the Sky Bridge. This bridge construction was completed in 2005 and is a 125m curved pedestrian cable-stayed bridge. It is suspended 660m above sea level and is a really impressive piece of engineering.  To finish the day we decided to head to another beach. This was a really quiet beautiful beach which was absolutely stunning.  All in all it was another beautiful day!
