Day 31- I ate a cricket

New day new country. Today I am crossing the boarder after one night into Cambodia.  Last night was a bit of a mare. I arrived into Bangkok after a very pleasant flight (it was only two of us on a row so I had a middle seat between me and a very quiet gentleman. Bliss. Immigration was very confusing and took some time however I think I am getting used to this disorganisation. I then entered the arrival hall where my transfer was supposed to be waiting. After about an hour of walking up and down I still couldn’t find them and had to ask my poor mother to call the UK line to try and figure it out. It was a moment where I just wanted to go home to the safety of my bed. I miss my mother so much, she has always been on my side, she has always been there even when I have been wrong. She is also the one person who even when I am wrong is not scared to tell me. I realised in this moment how now more then ever I would be nothing without my parents. Without my mum I would not be the de...

Day 31- Sri Lanka- what I have learnt

Sophie and I had a lie in before making it to the airport. Sophie is off to Delhi and I’m off to Bangkok. I thought whilst I had some time to kill at the airport I would write about what I have learnt in Sri Lanka. Environmental The streets are very clean. There isn’t much litter or waste discarded.  The beaches are stunning. Very sandy with warm water.  There are lots of mountain areas Sri Lanka is struggling with deforestation. Previously 70% of Sri Lanka was made up for Forrest’s and this has now been reduced to 20%. Major cities such as Negumbo are heavily polluted. Sri Lanka has a huge amount of wildlife including beautiful fish, birds and turtles. Sri Lanka has many conservation projects in place to try and protect these animals. There are however a lot of places that use animals purely to make money without treating them right! Please please please do your research before you touch a turtle or have a picture with an elephants trunk wrapped around you. ...

Day 30- fast busses and Scottish comedians

Today Soph and I got up early so that we could go see the turtles. This was Sophie’s first time but my third. Call me a pro. After this we went to have breakfast in Saltys... again.  We packed up our room and checked out. Our room for 2 nights cost a bargain 8100 rupies. This is a bargain £36 working out at £9.21 per person (2+2 is 4, quick maths. If you know you know). However this is what £9.21 buys you in Sri Lanka. Perks were that it was right on the beach, clean and it was close to restaurants and bars. The owners were  really friendly and even helped us wave our bus down Sophie and I took the bus to Colombo. These things are fast. Almost like a fiesta st eco 1.0L that goes like a 1.6. The bus was a pure health hazard. The sudden jolting left right and centre was something you had to get used to. At least it was a good core workout! You could have mistaken it for a  nightclub with the music volumn. The bus took 2 and half hours and was 150 ru...

Day 28 and 29- Is it two days if you don’t sleep in between?

Another day in sunny Hikkaduwa meant another day chilling and not doing much apart from going into the sea and eating nice food on the beach.  When I was in India I met some lovely amazing people who also turned out to be in Hikkaduwa. I met Sophie, Yaz and Hannah for brunch at our favourite spot; Salty Swamis. This is actually one of my favourite ever places to eat. It is run by an Australian family and although it is not authentic Sri Lankan there is nothing better then having a good avocado on toast with poached eggs or fish tacos. This afternoon also marked the day that I was reunited with another Sophie, who I have known since primary school and will be spending the next few days with.  Today was also Jens and Leanne’s last night in Sri Lanka, to celebrate Sophie, Leanne, Jen, Hannah, Lee and I decided to head to a local beach party. We went a grabbed some food before and chilled on the beach. The beach party was pretty awful. The music wasn...

Day 27- BOOK REVIEW- Conversations with Friends

So due to spending my time solely on the beach chilling and drinking cocktails I don’t really have an awful lot to say.  I have however had a chance to do a lot of reading so I thought today’s post could be a book review. Book title- Conversations with Friends. Author- Sally Rooney This book was Sally Ronneys debut novel. After all the hype around it and recommendations from friends to read it I finally picked it up. I have to say that I have really mixed feelings about the book. I found the writing style really difficult to get on with. It felt a bit rushed and lacking of detail. This may have been intentional by Rooney who wanted this to maybe come across as more of a diary entry where small details and descriptions are always missing. The book did feel like it was something that Francis (the main protagonist) never meant to share. I often had to go back and re-read sections due to the way the book was written. For example the conversations between characters we...

Day 26- Turtles, sunburn and sand

It was originally supposed to be a lie in and lazy day however we found out there is a sea turtle viewing point 10 minutes walk from our hotel. The turtles come out at about 6:30/7amish so of course we went along. These magnificent creatures are completely wild. They come down to the beach of their own free will and then swim back again. We waded through the water as they swam around us. There weren’t that many of them but the ones we saw were huge. Apparently they are Green Turtles which grow to a maximum length of 1m and weigh about 250kg. These were definitely if not that size, very close. After seeing the beautiful turtles we went for a lovely breakfast at Salty Swamis where I had a dosia. It wasn’t a traditional dosia and more like pancakes but It was absolutely delicious. The rest of the morning was spent on the beach chilling and grabbing cocktails. Today was the day I had run out of factor 50 suncream and had to go down to factor 30 as it w...

Day 25- A Sri Lankan Sunset

Today we left Ella, on our way out we visited Ravana falls. Sri Lanka has some beautiful waterfalls and this is no exception. I am so privileged to have seen this. This morning we went to visit an elephant orphanage. I was already a little uneasy. You hear so many horror story’s about elephants being mistreated in captivity with the purpose of their existence being only that to entertain humans. The orphanage was called The Elephant transit home and backed onto loads of land as well as a national park. As we approached the orphanage it seemed that the inner perimeter fence of the national park behind the orphanage had failed and therefore the elephants were getting out to the second perimeter fence by the road. We pulled over next to one of the elephants while it ate and covered itself in dirt. Being within 3 meters of this animal was a really special moment. These animals are absolutely beautiful. We got to the orphanage and watched the baby elephants being fed. ...
